| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | By Sunday all updates will be moved to the caringbridge site https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mandywhite/createorsignin Please go there to create an account. I do so appreciate your encouraging words! The neuro examination went smoothly today with a new sign of encouragement. Mandy was arousing and partially opening her eyes within two minutes of turning off the sedation meds. Consequently the exam went quickly and the meds were turned back on. That is both good and bad. I treasure seeing the life in her body and eyes so it was a mixed blessing to see that window of opportunity closed so quickly. Another positive sign is that the CT scan showed no more swelling and the brain appeared stable enough to allow the doctors to start weaning Mandy off the swelling medication, which will be easier on the rest of her body. A tracheotomy has been ordered to be scheduled which will remove the tube from her throat. I feel this to be a positive move since Mandy has a hard time swallowing pills, how much more unpleasant must a tube be. It is also the next step in weaning her from the sedation meds, the thought being that the risks will be lower since she will cough less and therefore decrease the risk of causing intracranial pressure. Please continue praising and praying the list from yesterday's post. As you think of my family ask God for wisdom as I need to make some tough decisions this weekend regarding work and schooling for the children. | 02-03-2012 |

| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | A webpage has been set up on the Caring Bridge website. Go to Caring Bridge and type in Mandywhite in order to read the daily updates. I will be posting them here for a bit longer as well. Here's the latest update from Mandy's husband: February 2, 2012 9:30 am The doctor took Mandy off the sedative for a longer period today for her neuro exam. Thank God I was there! Who would have thought that watching my wife blink would be such an exciting and emotional event? Although her eyes were only half open they were open enough to see what was going on. I spoke to her, held her hand and assured her that she was looking healthier and that a lot of people were praying for her. May it bring her peace as she rests and recovers. Other movements included blinking, moving her left arm spontaneously, and moving her head side to side. Her pupils are now the same size and responding rapidly. Reflexes on both hands and feet are normal. The CT scan revealed a slight reduction in the size of the brain. The darker areas that were on the right side of the frontal lobe have cleared to reveal no apparent stroke on that side. The stroke has only affected the front left. The lungs are fully recovered and functioning normally. However Mandy continues to run a low grade fever (101) and her white blood cell count is up a bit. Respiratory doctor is taking samples of the fluid to detect any bacteria. Other body fluids will also be sent to the lab to detect the presence of any infections. Please pray that any sign of infection will be found quickly and that the doctors will have wisdom in diagnosing and prognosing this and all complications. All lab work done on her blood continues to return excellent results, which is no surprise since Mandy has always taken care of herself. Thank God for her discipline! Sewing healthy habits is now reaping strength and vitality, not to mention peace of mind for all who love her! From what I could gather from the neurosurgeon they are looking for the edema (fluid that escaped during the stroke and is now spread over the left lobe….as I understand him to mean) to start dying off and for the body to reabsorb it. They also need to continue to see a decrease in the size of the swollen area. Judging from appearances of her face and surgical scar she is making improvements daily. Praise God for: -Tender mercies that truly are new every morning -Thoughtful friends and family that surround us with gifts and encouragement -Christian nurses and doctors that pray for us and understand our needs -A family that is close and members whose schedules are flexible -Glimpses of hope -Trials and tribulations like these that so effectively change us (only in my most sober-minded moments can I do this, but praise be to God when I can!) Please continue praying for: -a revealing of God’s work through this so that praise may continue in the hearts of His people -continual wisdom for medics in diagnosing and prognosing -restoration of the brain to its normal size -restoration of stroked cells and complete absorption of fluids in the stroked area -healing and protection from any infections -continued ability of her body to maintain healthy balance of nutrients -faith for me and her family -wisdom for me in prioritizing the childrens’ needs -clarity for me as to when to return to work -removal of fear for all of us -patience and perseverance in dealing with the everyday tasks -wisdom in delegating responsibilities (so many capable people have offered to help in so many ways) May God bless you all! | 02-02-2012 |
| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | Update from Mandy's husband this morning: Last night was rough, after struggling to keep from completely breaking down I was told that I couldn't sleep on a cot on the floor in the room, had to sleep in a chair! I understood the reasoning and didn't argue, but I had done it the last three nights and was in no mood to handle it. God gave me the grace though. This morning started rough. At 4:30 a.m. nurses were examining Mandy and it didn't look good. They said she was posturing (sign of brain stem damage) and she was engorged with milk for the baby....which I know is painful for her and often leads to breast infection. I needed some light to shine, so that was my prayer. About that time at least two former players of mine sent texts and messages praying for the same thing. Wellll, light did shine, God was gracious enough to strengthen my weak faith (how quickly I tend to forget who HE is!). The PA came to examine her with the surgeon on his way (he's yet to show but he will). After examining the CT scan he did not see any increase in swelling around the brain stem (our main concern). Hallelujah! Then he gave her a sedative vacation (took her off for a few minutes) to judge her responses. She responded in all extremities, just as she needed to, NO POSTURING! Then he tested her pupils with a flashlight. The right pupil had been responding but the left was motionless. Not this time, the left pupil responded, albeit slowly, but definitely responded and the right pupil had sped up. I was greatly encouraged. Then the doctor said it was okay to express milk so that her breast would not stay engorged. It had been since Friday that we had expressed, and she was nearly dry then. Not today! Milk was flowing and flowing well...........strange huh, that I'm talking about this! It was a great encouragement to me because I know how important it is to her. Thank you all for praying! Please continue. We're not out of the woods yet. They plan to keep her under at least two more days to make sure there is no more swelling. Also once the brain stops swelling they will need it to stabilize before replacing the skull piece. That's another surgery! So, still a long way to go but when you've been in the dark for so long, any glimmer of light feels pretty good. | 01-31-2012 |
| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | Praise God for some encouraging news and Michael White getting some much needed rest and time with his children! Update: A CT scan was taken this morning. I spoke to two doctors about the scan and they both felt the brain had decreased in size slightly. They tested Mandy's responses while off the sedative for a few minutes and all was normal. The best news right now is with the pupils, they are much closer to being the same size, the left eye (which was the original problem prior to surgery) was only slightly larger. Both pupils are responding well to light. They are trying to increase her blood pressure with blood infusion, albumin and dopamine in order to flush the stroked area and save as many neurons (?) as they can. This week will be slow in the news department as the goal is simply for her body to rest and the swelling to decrease. I will most likely post updates only once a day. Mandy's sister Micah is setting up a caringbridge site, more info will come out soon. This will allow anyone who is interested to sign up for updates. Since the better news of yesterday and after talking with the nurses, the doctors, and immediate family I decided to set up shifts for staying with Mandy, leaving the night shift (10pm-7am) to the nurses. Last night I spent at home and was able to get some much needed rest and time with the kids. As the days drag into weeks please lift the following prayer requests up to our gracious Father: -continued, even rapid, decrease in swelling of Mandy's brain -Mandy's body needs to stay strong during days and weeks of inactivity -Mandy will be able to tolerate the ventilator once the sedative is removed (hopefully very soon, but we don't know). If she coughs or gags too much it could increase intracranial swelling. -Her breast milk will continue to be made and that she will be able to nurse very soon. -Her left eye will be restored completely -No other complications will arise. -Strength and wisdom for all involved to be able to handle any and all news with faith in a omniscient, omnipotent, and benevolent God. -That time would pass quickly for our children and there would be some sense of normality in their daily routine. Praise God for: -The many people that have come to the throne of God on Mandy's behalf. It's truly remarkable! -The effect this event is having on people, me in particular, molding us to the image of Christ in so many areas despite our resistance. -The support of family and friends who are conscientious enough to be concerned for my kids EVERY need. -HIS WORD which is so comforting and speaks directly to this event, although it was written 2000+ years ago. -HIS peace, without which none of us who are so close to Mandy could handle this well. -The people that are reuniting around this and being reminded of what is truly important. Bless you all! | 01-31-2012 |
| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | From Mandy's husband, Mike: Mandy is resting with instructions to minimize stimulation in order to allow her body full rest. Doctors tell me that every brain responds differently so it is hard to say how long she will need to be sedated to the current level. In order to inform your prayers I want to let you know of some other complications. A portion of her left lung collapsed earlier as a result of a procedure done while...... in the operating room. A tube was inserted through the chest cavity....apparently this type of thing happens quite often. Also she has had a fever that the doctors feel is NOT a result of infection but instead of trauma. Another CT scan will be done first thing in the morning to monitor the swelling. Please pray the following: -Mandy's lung will be restored quickly to full capacity -Mandy's body would be strengthened enough to recover and fight off any infections -The swelling in her brain would subside -The stroke and its effects were minimal and that there would be no more -All nurses, doctors and specialists would have eyes to see what exactly needs to be done for Mandy. -Time will pass quickly for our children -Mandy's family and I will learn to give thanks in all things and to rejoice always Thank you for praying! | 01-30-2012 |

| Urgent prayer request Submitted by: Carol Pennington | Just and added note: Mandy's maiden name was Swafford. Cherri Swafford's Daughther. Former members of CHBC. Cherri is also a retired teacher from CHA. Mandy White, a friend of mine who attends Southern Hills, had surgery to remove a brain tumor this week and is not facing complications since the surgery. Please pray for this young mother, her husband and her seven sweet children. Here is an update from her husband: Mandy's brain is swelling too much, causing her to suffer some stroke and be unresponsive to requests. They are taking her back to surgery to remove the skull flap to allow her brain room to swell. She will be kept in a coma for at least two days. Please pray for wisdom and that there will be no permanent damage. | 01-28-2012 |
| Update on Mandy (Swafford) White Submitted by: Carol Pennington | Latest update on Mandy: Mandy is back in ICU after they removed the skull cap to allow her brain room to swell. She suffered a stroke in the left frontal lobe, but the rest of the brain appears healthy. They have sedated her heavily and have her on a ventilator in order to maximize her rest. She will be "under" for at least two days. | 01-28-2012 |
| Bob Adams Submitted by: Josh Atkinson | Bob Adams, not a member of our church, but a personal friend and brother in Christ, recently moved to South OKC from Bartlesville. According to his wife, Judy, he is having complications with advancing Parkinson's. Particularly, painful immobile legs and extremely high blood pressure. The doctors are doing their best to get some of these issues under control since there is real medical concern for a potential stroke. Judy asked if I would put him in our prayer chain and to specifically pray for God to extend His mercy upon Bob in this hour and that these complications would indeed be remedied soon. Judy asked me for some references for a quality hospice provider. If there is anyone with experience please pass their name on to me via email at mrjoshatkinson@gmail.com and I will then extend it to her. Thank you very much! | 01-22-2012 |
